Activist, rebel, punker, romantica: Britse modeontwerpster Vivienne Westwood is op 81-jarige leeftijd overleden. Ze overleed vredig en in het bijzijn van haar familie in de Londense wijk Clapham, meldt haar modehuis donderdagavond op Twitter.

Westwood maakte in de jaren zeventig naam als de ontwerpster van het punktijdperk en groeide uit tot een van de meest vooraanstaande Britse ontwerpers.

Ze stond vooral bekend om het combineren van geestig-bizarre wijze met traditionele elementen. In 1971 maakte Westwood haar eerste mode-statement door zich een wit stekelkapsel aan te meten - een haarstijl die later zal uitgroeien tot een van de iconen van de punk.

Haar aparte en grootse ontwerpen werden door vele sterren gedragen; vooral Helena Bonham-Carter was een groot fan van Westwoods werk. Vivienne was bijvoorbeeld verantwoordelijk voor de outfit die prinses Eugenie aanhad op de bruiloft van prins William in 2011. Ook de beroemde grote hoed van Pharrell Williams tijdens de Grammy’s in 2014, die zelfs een eigen Twitter-account kreeg, was van haar hand.

Hoewel Westwood aanvankelijk koos voor een carrière in het onderwijs, werd ze later wereldberoemd door tegen schenen in de modewereld te schoppen. "Ik werd het omdat ik het kon", verklaarde ze vaak in interviews.

Westwood was getrouwd met Andreas Kronthaler, de man die na hun huwelijk als creatief directeur kwam werken in haar modehuis. "Ik ga door met Vivienne in mijn hart”, luidt zijn reactie op haar overlijden. „We hebben tot het einde samengewerkt en ze heeft me heel veel gegeven waar ik nu mee verder kan. Thank you, darling."
